Piano Lessons in Slough

Windsor Piano School is the piano school most Slough families end up driving to, and the journey is shorter than people expect: roughly fifteen minutes from the town centre, Upton and Chalvey, fifteen to twenty from Langley and Cippenham, and about six minutes on the direct train from Slough station. What waits at the other end is a whole department under one roof — a team of conservatoire-trained piano teachers, a written progression pathway, termly performances, and ABRSM practical exams held on our own premises rather than in a hired hall. Everything starts with a twenty-minute taster session for £18. There are a few parking spaces directly beside the studio, plus free parking on the surrounding streets.

Why the drive is worth it

Why Slough families travel to us

Exams happen where you already are

We are an official ABRSM Private Visit Centre. Grades 1 to 8 are examined on our own premises as ABRSM Private Visit examinations, exclusively for our students, on a piano they already know. Diploma examinations follow ABRSM’s current arrangements for each level, which may be digital or face-to-face where Private Visits are available. No unfamiliar hall, no separate trip to a public exam centre on a Saturday morning, no hour of nerves in a corridor.

Results that hold up over time

A 100% ABRSM pass rate, with 73% of entries at Distinction or Merit across 3,009+ exam entries. That is a long enough run to be a standard rather than a good year.

Eighteen years of the same approach

The school has taught in Windsor since 2008, more than 18 years. Families who move within Berkshire, or whose children change schools, tend to stay with us, which is why the department has grown the way it has.

A team of teachers, one written standard

Piano is our founding and largest department. Whichever teacher your child is matched with, they follow the same written pathway and the same expectations, so a change of teacher never means starting again.

The pathway

Four stages, written down before the first lesson

1

Foundation

How to sit, where the hands go, and how to read both clefs from week one. We take our time over posture, a relaxed wrist and a steady pulse, because the habits formed here are the ones a student is still using at Grade 8.

2

Control

Fingers that sound even, hands that genuinely work apart, scales and arpeggios in the common keys, controlled legato and staccato, a first real use of the pedal, and sight-reading as a weekly habit rather than an exam chore.

3

Expression

Bringing a melody out above its accompaniment, shaping dynamics and phrases, pedalling for colour, and learning how Baroque, Classical, Romantic and twentieth-century music each want to be played.

4

Performance

Playing a whole piece without running out of concentration, carrying on after a slip, accompanying and playing duets, reading fluently at sight, and walking to a piano in front of an audience without dread.

Progress against the pathway is reviewed every term and written down, so you always know which stage your child is working in.

Your teachers

A department, not a single teacher

Trained where it counts

The piano department is a team of piano teachers trained at institutions including the Royal Academy of Music, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music and the Minsk Conservatoire. They teach beginners as seriously as they teach diploma candidates. For Grade 5 upwards, see advanced piano lessons.

Matched, not allocated

We do not hand out teachers by rota. At the £18 taster we match teacher to student on age, personality, goals and musical taste, and every teacher works to the same written pathway, so the right fit is a question of chemistry rather than luck. If a Slough family needs a particular evening slot, we work from availability across the whole department rather than one diary.

Biographies for the whole department are on Meet Our Team.

Getting here

Getting here from Slough

By car

The studio is at 203 Clarence Road, Windsor SL4 5AN, a few minutes from the middle of town. From SL1 — the town centre, Chalvey and Cippenham — the usual run is south on the A355 towards junction 6 of the M4, then straight on into Windsor: about fifteen minutes outside the school run. From SL2, covering Upton Lea, Farnham Royal and Stoke Poges, allow nearer twenty. From SL3 — Langley, Colnbrook and Datchet — the B470 along the river is normally quicker than doubling back to the motorway.

By train

Slough is the interchange for the Windsor branch line. The shuttle to Windsor and Eton Central takes about six minutes and runs through the day, and the station is roughly a five-minute walk from Clarence Road. Windsor and Eton Riverside, on the Waterloo line, is a similar walk. Teenagers coming from Slough or Langley usually find the train easier than being driven.

By bus

Buses run regularly between Slough bus station, next door to Slough railway station, and Windsor town centre. The town-centre stops are a few minutes on foot from the studio.

Parking

There are a few parking spaces directly beside the studio. When those are taken, parking on the surrounding streets is free, and there is usually space within a short walk.

Questions from Slough parents

Piano lessons in Slough — FAQs

Do you teach in Slough itself, or do we come to Windsor?

All lessons happen at our Windsor studio on Clarence Road. We deliberately do not run satellite rooms in Slough, because the things that make the school work — the recital room, the exam centre status, a team of teachers sharing one timetable — only exist in one building. The trade-off is a fifteen-minute drive; the gain is that nothing about the teaching is scaled down.

How long does the journey take from Langley or Cippenham?

Cippenham is usually about fifteen to twenty minutes by car, and Langley about the same using the B470 through Datchet rather than the motorway. Both are longer between 3pm and 4pm on weekdays, which is why most Slough families take a slot from late afternoon onwards.

Can my child travel over from Slough on their own?

Older students often do. The train from Slough to Windsor and Eton Central takes around six minutes and the station is a five-minute walk from the studio, so the whole door-to-door trip is manageable for a secondary-school student. We are happy to place a Slough student in a slot that lines up with a sensible train home.

Where do we park while the lesson is on?

There are a few spaces directly beside the studio, and free parking on the surrounding streets when those are taken. A 30-minute lesson leaves plenty of time to park properly rather than wait on a double yellow, and most parents use the time in town.

Will the lesson clash with a Slough school day?

Our weekday teaching runs from midday until 9pm, and from 9am until 6pm at weekends, so lessons sit outside the school day for children at both Slough and Windsor schools. Slots after 4.30pm and on Saturdays are the ones Slough families ask for most, so it is worth booking the taster early in the term.

Do we have to travel to a Slough exam centre for ABRSM exams?

No. We hold ABRSM practical grade exams at our own premises as an official Private Visit Centre, so your child is examined in the room they have been taught in. There is no separate journey to a public exam centre and no unfamiliar piano on the day.
