Singing Lessons in Windsor
Windsor Piano School has taught music in Windsor, Slough and across Berkshire for more than 18 years, and our singing department covers classical, pop, soul and musical theatre with teachers who both perform professionally and coach seriously. Singing is the most personal instrument to learn. There is no case to hide behind and no keyboard to blame, which is exactly why it needs a patient teacher and a clear plan rather than a run of encouraging but vague lessons. Weekly lessons run in term time for children and adults alike, and every new student starts with a twenty-minute taster session for £18, with no commitment either way.

Classical, pop, soul and musical theatre voice training.

A singing education, not just a singing lesson.
The problem families often face
Most people who come to us for voice lessons have had the same experience somewhere else: an hour of enjoyable singing, warm feedback, and no idea what actually changed. Because the instrument is invisible, it is unusually easy for singing lessons to become pleasant company rather than training.
Meanwhile the real problems go unaddressed — pushing for high notes, running out of breath mid-phrase, a break between registers that never smooths out, and a habit of singing loudly because loud feels like commitment.
How Windsor Piano School solves it
- We treat the voice as a technique subject, with a documented pathway and named milestones.
- Teachers set short, specific weekly practice targets — which matters more for singers than anyone, because unfocused practice on the voice entrenches habits and tires the instrument.
- Progress is reviewed each term.
- Students perform for one another regularly, the only reliable way to build the nerve a private room never tests.
- Exam preparation, for those who want it, is folded into ordinary lessons because we host ABRSM exams in our own building.
From first songs to confident musicianship.
Foundation
Posture and alignment, breathing from the diaphragm rather than the shoulders, easy onset without pushing, a comfortable middle range, matching pitch reliably, and reading rhythm and simple melody.
Control
Extending range safely, smoothing the transition between registers, breath management across long phrases, consistent tone at different volumes, clear diction and vowel shaping, and holding a harmony line in tune.
Expression
Dynamic and tonal colour, phrasing and text interpretation, vibrato that arrives naturally rather than being manufactured, microphone technique for contemporary styles, and genuine stylistic fluency rather than one all-purpose voice.
Performance
Singing whole songs from memory, working with a pianist or backing track, stagecraft and communicating with an audience, sight-singing, and recovering from a wrong entry without stopping.
Singing lessons shaped around the student
Singing for children and beginners
Most children can start from around age 5, but every child is different — the £18 taster session is the best way to find out. Early lessons are song-led and game-led, building pitch accuracy, rhythm and confidence long before anything technical is named.
Classical and choral singing
Art song, oratorio and choral repertoire with proper breath and resonance work, plus preparation for school and church choir auditions.
Pop, soul and R&B
Contemporary tone, riffing and stylistic ornamentation, microphone control and singing convincingly over a track or band.
Musical theatre
Belt and mix developed safely, character and text work, and audition repertoire chosen to suit the individual voice rather than the current fashion.
Songwriting and performance
Writing, arranging and recording your own material, for students who want to be artists as well as singers.
Singing for adults
Beginners, returners and people who were told once, wrongly, that they could not sing. Adults tend to prefer sixty-minute lessons and often progress faster than they expect.
Exams, performance and where it leads
Windsor Piano School is an official ABRSM Private Visit Centre. Practical exams for Grades 1 to 8 are held on site as ABRSM Private Visit examinations, exclusively for our students — a familiar room, a familiar piano and familiar faces, which removes a great deal of the nervousness that costs marks. Diploma examinations follow ABRSM’s current arrangements for each level, which may be digital or face-to-face where Private Visits are available.
Aural training, sight-singing and written theory are taught alongside the voice, which is what turns a singer into a musician other musicians want to work with.
A school-wide track record
School-wide, our best-known result belongs to Harvey Lin, a Windsor Piano School student who reached the BBC Young Musician finals in the Keyboard category in both 2016 and 2020 and, while still studying with Edita, was awarded a fellowship to the Aspen Music Festival. He attended Eton College and later went on to Harvard. That is our piano department rather than our singing department, but it reflects the standard the whole school teaches to.

Singing lessons in Windsor — FAQs
What age can a child start singing lessons?
Most children can start from around age 5, but every child is different — the £18 taster session is the best way to find out. Early lessons are short, song-based and playful, and we never push a young voice.
Is singing safe for a child’s voice?
Yes, when it is taught properly. The whole point of trained teaching is that we work within the range and volume a young voice can handle comfortably, and stop before it tires.
My child’s voice is breaking — should we pause lessons?
No, and this is one of the best times to have a teacher. Lessons continue with adjusted range and repertoire so the voice is guided through the change rather than left to sort itself out.
Can adults learn to sing, or is it something you are born with?
Almost everyone can learn. Genuine tone-deafness is rare; what is common is an untrained ear and untrained breath, and both respond to teaching.
Do you teach pop and musical theatre or only classical?
Both, and most students do a mixture. Belt and mix are taught safely alongside classical technique rather than instead of it.
Are exams compulsory?
No. Many singers never take one. For those who want a benchmark, ABRSM practical grade exams are held on site as Private Visit examinations.
What happens at the £18 taster session?
Twenty minutes with a singing teacher: some gentle singing, a conversation about the styles and goals that matter to you, and an honest recommendation on lesson length. There is no commitment. Slough families, including those in Langley and Cippenham, are usually about fifteen minutes away by car.
