Drum Lessons in Windsor
Windsor Piano School has taught music across Windsor, Slough and Berkshire for more than 18 years, and our drum department is staffed by working professional drummers with touring, session and Abbey Road recording experience. Drums are the instrument parents worry about most and the one that most reliably turns a reluctant musician into an enthusiastic one. We teach it properly: stick technique, reading, time-keeping and groove, inside the same school structure as every other instrument. Lessons are weekly in term time, for children and adults, starting with a twenty-minute taster for £18.

Drumming looks like the least academic instrument and is quietly one of the most demanding. Anyone can produce a beat in ten minutes; playing in time, at a consistent volume, with independent hands and feet, and holding a band together, takes real teaching.
Students who learn from videos usually develop one comfortable groove, a tense grip and no ability to read a chart.

Posture and kit set-up, matched and traditional grip, single strokes, basic rock beats, counting, and reading rhythm on a stave.
Control
Dynamics and consistent stroke height, rudiments including doubles, paradiddles and flams, fills, hi-hat and bass drum independence, and locking to a click.
Expression
Groove and feel, ghost notes and accents, tuning the kit, cymbal choices, and stylistic fluency across rock, pop, funk, blues, jazz, Latin and metal.
Performance
Playing complete songs, holding a band’s tempo, reading charts, soloing, and stage confidence.

Drums for beginners
Most children can start from around age 5, but every child is different — the £18 taster session is the best way to find out. Kits are height-adjustable and we use lighter sticks for younger players, so small students are not disadvantaged.
Rock and pop drumming
Song-based learning with proper technique underneath, which is what makes the fifth song faster to learn than the first.
Jazz and Latin drumming
Brushes, swing feel, comping and clave-based patterns for students who want stylistic breadth.
Drums for adults
Beginners and returners, including people who played as teenagers and want to get back behind a kit properly.
Theory and musicianship
Rhythm reading, aural skills and basic harmony, so drummers can talk to the rest of the band.
Exam preparation
Graded exams prepared inside normal lessons and examined on site three times per academic year, for students who want a formal benchmark.

Preparation happens inside ordinary lessons, so exams become a checkpoint rather than an ordeal.
A school-wide track record
Our students hold places at Eton, Westminster and St Paul’s. School-wide, our best-known result belongs to Harvey Lin, a Windsor Piano School student who reached the BBC Young Musician finals in the Keyboard category in both 2016 and 2020, later earning an Aspen Fellowship and places at Eton and Harvard. That is our piano department rather than our drum department, but it reflects the standard the whole school teaches to.

Owain Hanford
Owain graduated from Falmouth University with a 2:1 in Popular Music and holds a Merit in Popular Music Performance from the Institute of Popular Music Performance in London. He has toured the UK, Ireland and America and recorded at Abbey Road Studios, and works across rock and pop.
Thomas Charlton
Tom brings sixteen years of teaching experience, educated at Trinity College of Music London and Drumtech Acton. He works equally well in one-to-one and group settings and is a natural with students who need patience and structure in equal measure.
Francesco Borrelli
Francesco began drumming in Naples at the age of six and added classical percussion study by twelve, bringing an unusually strong technical grounding to contemporary drum kit teaching.

Lesson fees are the same rate for every instrument. A £50 registration fee applies, fully refundable when lessons end. Lessons follow the published Term Dates, and full details are on Fees 2026/27.

What age can a child start drums?
Most children can start from around age 5, but every child is different — the £18 taster session is the best way to find out. Kits adjust to size and early lessons focus heavily on coordination and counting.
Do we need a drum kit at home?
No. A practice pad and a pair of sticks cover the first several months, and a great deal of real drumming practice is quiet pad work.
Isn’t it too loud for a flat?
Electronic kits with headphones are a genuinely good option and we are happy to advise on models.
Will my child learn to read music?
Yes. Rhythm reading starts immediately and chart reading follows, which is what makes a drummer useful in ensembles.
Are exams available?
Yes, on site three times per academic year, but they are entirely optional.
What happens at the £18 taster session?
Twenty minutes behind a kit with one of our drummers, plus an honest recommendation on lesson length. There is no commitment either way. From Slough it is roughly a fifteen-minute drive, and the direct train into Windsor takes only a few minutes.
